Holi was welcomed by the entire city with great zest last Sunday but the celebration of the festival of colours proved fatal to two youngsters at who drowned in the lake situated at Waghbil.
Bhakti Patil (24) and Yogesh Patil (21) went to the lake to wash off the Holi colours after playing Holi at around 3:30 pm. Bhakti, originally a resident of Mumbai, was living here as a tenant along with her brother.
She is believed to be working in the hotel industry, whereas Yogesh is a student and a resident of Waghbil village.
According to sources, Bhakti lost her balance and slipped into the artificial lake built on a private property for breeding of fishes. Since the girl was overweight she drowned immediately as the lake was 15 to 20 feet deep. Yogesh, who is believed to be a good swimmer, jumped into the lake to save her. Bhakti caught hold of Yogesh thus leaving the pressure of water to pull Yogesh as well. The body of the girl floated up after an hour but Yogesh's body was not traceable until one of the villagers helped get his body out of the lake.
However, villagers here are doubtful about how the body of an obese person can float up immediately within an hour of drowning in a lake that is more than 15 feet deep. Villagers believe that a corpse takes at least 12 hours to float up in cases of drowning.
A case of accidental death is registered with the Kasarvadavali Police Station and investigations are on. The post mortem reports are awaited after which the reason of deaths will be ascertained.
